Levon Helm documentary to debut at TheArtsAt311

 

TheArtsAt311 will host the Arkansas premiere of Ain’t in It for My Health: A film about Levon Helm on Wednesday, May 15, at 7:30 p.m.

Helm, who was the drummer for The Band, was born in Elaine, AR, and grew up in Turkey Scratch.

The film, directed by Jacob Hatley, documents the making of Helm’s first studio album in 25 years, the Grammy Award-winning Dirt Farmer  and the subsequent resurgence of his career that continued until his death of cancer on April 19, 2012.

Because of the increased chance of rain, tonight’s Art and Stroll in downtown Paragould has been rescheduled for Thursday, May 9.

The extension means five more artists have committed to the show.  Among those expected to display their artworks are students from Paragould Jr. High, Black River, Greene County Tech and the NEA Home School Association. 

According to an email from Gina Jarrett of Main Street Paragould, many artists are new to A&S this year, including Memphis artist Billy Moore and his folk artworks.

May's bluegrass concert is 'Nothin' Fancy'

The band Nothin’ Fancy will perform a concert of bluegrass music on Monday, May 13, at 7 p.m. at the Collins Theatre, 120 West Emerson Street, in downtown Paragould. 

The concert is part of the Bluegrass Monday concert series presented by KASU 91.9 FM.  KASU will literally “pass the hat” to collect money to pay the group.  The suggested donation is $5 per person.

Budding authors are invited to sharpen their pencils, stock up on notepads and sign up for the Summer 2013 Writers’ Retreat at the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum in Piggott.

The retreat will be held June 3 through 7. 

Pat Carr will serve as mentor.  She has published 16 books, including The Women in the Mirror, which won the Iowa Fiction Award, and Death of a Confederate Colonel, winner of both the PEN Southwest Fiction Award and John Estes Cooke Civil War Fiction Award.

David Davis and the Warrior River Boys will perform a concert of bluegrass music on Monday, April 22, at 7 p.m. at the Collins Theatre, located at 120 West Emerson St. in downtown Paragould.

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s traveling exhibition, “Deadly Medicine: Creating the Master Race,” will premiere on Thursday, April 25, at the Dean B. Ellis Library at Arkansas State University. The exhibit will run through June 16.

“Deadly Medicine: Creating the Master Race” examines how the Nazi leadership, in collaboration with individuals in professions traditionally charged with healing and the public good, used science to help legitimize persecution, murder and, ultimately, genocide.

Annual pottery sale date set

The ASU Pottery Guild will hold its annual Spring Pottery Sale this Thursday through Friday, April 18-20, at The Edge Coffeehouse, 1900 Aggie Road.

The sale will feature handmade ceramics by ASU students, faculty and alumni.

Sale hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
