GCT grad awarded ASU grant

A Greene  County woman is one of six incoming Arkansas State University students to receive a choral music grant.

L. Breanne Drew of Paragould is a graduate of Greene County Tech who plans to major in physical occupational therapy.  Her parents are Annette Drew and Robert Drew.

Although she’s not a music major, she was selected by audition to receive $1,600 to sing in two ASU choirs during the 2013-14 year.

The choral grant is renewable for up to three additional years if academic and performance requirements are met.

NEA Baptist hosting free blood pressure seminar, luncheon

 

According to the American Medical Group Association, one in three U.S. adults has high blood pressure.  Less than half of those patients have it adequately controlled.

On Wednesday, May 29, at 11:30 a.m. Dr. Adam Woodruff, nephrologist and clinical hypertension  specialist with NEA Baptist Clinic, will be the featured speaker at a “Measure Up, Pressure Down” luncheon.

The free seminar will be held at Southwest Church of Christ Life Center, located at 1601 James St. in Jonesboro.

Deadline to apply for Century Farm status fast approaching

 

Time is running out for your family to make history.

The Arkansas Agriculture Department is accepting applications for the 2013 Arkansas Century Farm program.

To be eligible for the designation, applications must be postmarked no later than May 31.

The program recognizes Arkansas’s agricultural heritage and honors families who have owned and farmed the same land for at least 100 years.

In 2012, the first year of the program, 83 farms were certified.

To qualify, farms must meet the following criteria:

The Second Annual Aging with Knowledge Conference, sponsored by the East Arkansas Area Agency on Aging, will be held Thursday, June 6.  This year’s topic is “Stress and You and What to Do.”

Registration will begin at 8 a.m.  The conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas, 3414 One Place in Jonesboro.

Greene & Gold Scrimmage collecting supplies for tornado victims

 

On Monday, May 20, a massive tornado tore through the town of Moore, Oklahoma. 

In addition to homes and businesses, the town’s hospital and two elementary schools were destroyed.

At least 24 people died, including 9 children.  Seven of the young victims were students at Plaza Towers Elementary School.

On Thursday, May 23, at 8 p.m. the students and supporters of Greene County Tech will gather for the annual Green & Gold Scrimmage.
